Excerpt from Constitution, by-Laws, of the Jewish Foster Home Society of the City of Philadelphia We, whose Names are hereunto subscribed, and other citizens of the State of Pennsylvania, who are associated together as members of a Society called "The Jewish Foster Home Society" are desirous to acquire and enjoy the powers and immunities of a corporation or body politic in Law with the following Constitution. Preamble. Deeply impressed with the necessity of providing a home for destitute and unprotected children of Jewish parentage, the Ladies of the several congregations of Philadelphia have associated to form an institution denominated "the Jewish Foster Home," wherein, orphans or the children of indigent Israelites may be rescued from the evils of ignorance and vice, comfortably provided for, instructed in moral and religious duties, and thus prepared to become useful members of the community. For the government of this Society the following constitution has been adopted. Article 1. Every person becoming a member shall pay an annual contribution of two Dollars, or by paying the sum of thirty Dollars shall be a member for life. Article 2. The Society shall meet on the second Tuesday of February of every year, at which meeting fifteen members shall be competent to transact business; at this meeting thirty Managers shall be elected in whom the whole concerns of the Society shall be vested. Article 3. The Managers shall meet, (being duly notified by the officiating Secretary) within three days of their election, and shall choose a first and second Directress, a Secretary and Treasurer; they shall make by-laws for their own government, prepare and adopt rules and regulations for "the Home," make an annual report of their proceedings and the condition of "the Home;" they shall meet statedly once a month and oftener if the business of the Home require it.
